Qatar-Iraq relations

The Republic of Iraq and the State of Qatar have fraternal relations based on a history and common interests between the two brotherly countries as well as social ties and societal ties between the two brotherly peoples. The history of Iraq and Qatar exchanging diplomatic representation at the level of ambassadors dates back to 1972 AD, after the independence of the State of Qatar.

The Qatari-Iraqi relations were characterized by periods of tension in addition to some diplomatic crises, as the Qatari embassy in Baghdad was closed in 1990 after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

However, these relations have recently witnessed a significant improvement, especially with Baghdad's attempt to open up to the Arab world, after declaring victory over ISIS and regaining control of its lands in December 2017.

In view of the keenness of the wise leadership in both countries to look to the future and open new pages in the development of relations between them for the benefit of the peoples of the two brotherly countries, His Highness Sheikh / Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani - Emir of the country, may Almighty Allah preserve him, issued a decision to reopen the embassy of the state Qatar in Baghdad on February 15, 2018, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were resumed.

On the governmental and non-governmental level, the State of Qatar has provided all forms of humanitarian support to brotherly Iraq through humanitarian relief and development projects in education and health, to open economic horizons between the two countries, and to achieve the interests of the two countries.
